How AI-Driven Audio Is Reshaping the Future of Content

As companies adapt to changing content consumption habits, text-to-speech (TTS) artificial intelligence (AI) platforms are emerging as essential tools to enhance user engagement. Audio content, which allows for multitasking, significantly extends user interaction, with research showing that audio can drive three times longer engagement compared to text. This makes TTS AI platforms a strategic asset for organizations looking to repurpose content efficiently and deepen connections with their audiences, fostering greater retention and loyalty.

As attention spans continue to shrink and multitasking becomes the norm—whether it’s toggling between Slack messages, texts and emails, or joining Zoom calls—brands must evolve to capture and sustain audience attention. Many of us often lack the time or focus to sit down and read our digital correspondence thoroughly. The challenge for brands, then, is not just to make their content stand out, but to deliver it in a way that is quick, engaging and adaptable. AI-driven audio content offers a solution, enabling brands to efficiently repurpose long-form material, extend their reach across social channels and seamlessly integrate it into broader content marketing strategies.

“The podcast advertising market is projected to reach $4.02 billion this year, as user numbers are expected to grow to 668.1 million by 2028.”

This shift toward audio content is not only being driven by changing consumption habits, but also by the significant growth in podcast advertising. The podcast advertising market is projected to reach $4.02 billion this year, as user numbers are expected to grow to 668.1 million by 2028. Major brands, like Amazon, Macy’s and Capital One, are recognizing this potential and are investing heavily in podcast advertising, according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB). As brands increasingly tap into audio platforms, their focus shifts from merely reaching more people to creating deeper engagement and delivering content in ways that meet the demands of modern, multitasking audiences.

“These tools not only reduce costs, but also cut down production time by eliminating the need for expensive recording equipment and professional studios.”

The barriers to entering the podcast or audio space have been significantly lowered, thanks to AI-driven TTS platforms. These tools not only reduce costs, but also cut down production time by eliminating the need for expensive recording equipment and professional studios. Traditionally, creating quality audio content required hiring talent, booking studio time and crafting the perfect script. Now, with platforms like Eleven Labs and Play.ht, these tasks can be completed in just a few clicks, streamlining the entire process at minimal cost.

Using AI to Repurpose Content

One of my healthcare clients, focused on peer-to-peer sales, sought to expand their reach and enhance their prospecting efforts with hospital executives. Once the messaging strategy was established, I turned to their extensive website content to explore how it could be repurposed. This approach not only expedited outreach efforts, but did so cost- effectively, as it eliminated the need to create new content from scratch. The plan involved converting a multipage PDF into audio files using the Play.ht platform, which I then incorporated into several weeks of email marketing campaigns. Each audio segment introduced a topic that aligned with a broader email strategy, directing recipients to a blog page where they could choose to either listen to or read the full transcription. In addition, automated workflows with integrated forms were set up to capture leads and gauge user intent, guiding prospects down the funnel.

Overall, the process was straightforward—from selecting voiceovers to generating the final audio files. The primary challenge, however, was ensuring accurate pronunciation of specific terms, which occasionally required adjusting the script. This trade-off, although minor, was well worth the time and cost savings achieved through the use of AI-driven tools.

“Eleven Labs enables users to listen to their favorite books or articles narrated by iconic voices—for example, Judy Garland, James Dean and Sir Laurence Olivier—offering hundreds of voices in 32 languages.”

Platforms like Meta AI now allow users to select from various voice options for assistants, including well-known voices, such as Awkwafina, Dame Judi Dench and John Cena. Similarly, Eleven Labs enables users to listen to their favorite books or articles narrated by iconic voices—for example, Judy Garland, James Dean and Sir Laurence Olivier—offering hundreds of voices in 32 languages.

Taking this a step further for the same healthcare client, I recently explored Google’s NotebookLM platform, which can generate AI-hosted podcasts. Featuring male and female hosts engaging in a realistic dialogue, this platform uses uploaded content to create an immersive podcast experience.

If you’ve already listened to the AI-generated audio at the top of this post, created using NotebookLM, you’ll find the results both impressive and somewhat unsettling in their authenticity.

This HubSpot post cited four ways that AI can Influence your content:

Personalized Recommendations:

By analyzing listeners’ past interactions, preferences and even time spent on specific types of content, AI can predict and serve up highly personalized audio suggestions that will enhance the users’ experience, increasing engagement and boosting retention rates.

Targeted Advertising:

By analyzing listener data and uncovering patterns, advertisers can deliver hyper-targeted ads that resonate on a personal level, significantly amplifying the impact of their messaging to ensure maximum engagement and retention.

Greater Insights:

AI is transforming how we create and market audio content by turning vast listener data into actionable insights. This not only helps advertisers understand current preferences, but also predicts future trends, making audio content more dynamic and responsive to audience needs.

Improving Accessibility:

AI is enhancing accessibility to audio content by providing voices for those who can’t speak and converting written materials into audio for individuals with visual or reading challenges. In addition, AI-powered real-time transcription and closed captioning make podcasts accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing, broadening the audience for audio content.

A Powerful Advantage for Businesses

The versatility of today’s TTS AI platforms offers a powerful advantage for businesses looking to streamline content creation and reach wider audiences. By enabling the selection of voices, languages and customizable delivery options, these tools empower brands to not only repurpose existing content efficiently, but to also enhance engagement in a more personalized, dynamic way.

As AI technology continues to evolve, it opens up new avenues for creativity and innovation, transforming the way we communicate and connect with audiences across industries. The future of content is clearly being shaped by these advancements, and brands that leverage these tools effectively will be well-positioned to succeed in this rapidly changing landscape.
