The Case for Adopting The Responsible AI Code of Ethics

In the pursuit of optimizing platform safety, the leadership teams at ChatGPT, Bard and other AI platforms are diligently striving to fortify their offerings. Concurrently, enterprises must exhibit a comparable level of commitment toward governing AI system implementations. These security solutions will play a pivotal role in detecting and redirecting internal as well as existential threats associated with AI deployment that can impact the business on several levels.

As business leaders explore the utilization of AI technology for operations automation, increased productivity and simplification of extensive data analysis, they face the challenge of mitigating the risk of eroding trust in AI. This encompasses addressing unintentional bias, which can result in inaccurate and socially inappropriate outcomes that heighten distrust; unexplainable results, which is when conclusions lack clear explanations; and common hallucinations, which manifest as inconsistent or false answers.

Part of this discrepancy is due to a lack of clarity around AI governance ownership. Who owns this process? What are the responsibilities of the developers, compliance and/or risk-management officers, and internal auditors?

Adopting Responsible AI Code of Ethics

To foster trust, companies are adopting “Responsible AI” protocols and crafting an AI Code of Ethics. These documents delineate governance strategies to mitigate unintended bias, ensure transparency and comprehensibility, empower employees to question AI platforms proactively, and maintain an environment of innovation. This approach safeguards data privacy and security, promotes ethical usage, and delivers value and benefits to customers, stakeholders and the broader market.

In the Accenture article, “Responsible AI: Scale AI with Confidence,” Responsible AI is defined as the practice of designing, developing and deploying AI with good intention to empower employees and businesses, and fairly impact customers and society—allowing companies to engender trust and scale AI with confidence. The article’s author divides the concept into four distinct categories:

  • Principles and Governance: Create a clear mission and principles for Responsible AI, and set up a transparent governance system within the organization to foster confidence and trust in AI technologies.
  • Risk, Policy and Control: Enhance adherence to existing laws and keep an eye on future regulations. Formulate risk-mitigation policies and put them into action using a risk management framework, ensuring consistent reporting and monitoring.
  • Technology and Enablers: Create tools and methods that uphold principles like fairness, clarity, strength, traceability and privacy, and integrate them into the AI systems and platforms utilized.
  • Culture and Training: Enable leadership to prioritize Responsible AI as a crucial business necessity and ensure that all employees receive training to comprehensively grasp Responsible AI principles and the benchmarks for success.

1) limited AI expertise or knowledge (39%),
2) increasing data complexity and data silos (32%), and
3) the lack of tools/platforms for developing AI models (28%).”

As AI continues to advance on a daily basis, it becomes imperative for companies to maintain alignment with these evolving platforms. This alignment not only enables them to proactively respond to emerging regulatory changes, but also underscores the significance of upholding the principles of “Responsible AI.” This entails satisfying the expectations and requirements of their employees, customers and shareholders, ensuring that AI integration is conducted in a manner that upholds transparency, fairness and ethical use. In this evolving landscape, the synergy between businesses and AI platforms will be pivotal in cultivating a climate of trust and innovation while navigating the complexities of the AI-driven era.
